Overview
Cobalt is used in rechargeable batteries, superalloys and catalysts. Much of the world's supply comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, often as a co-product of copper.
Because of well-documented concerns about artisanal mining conditions, cobalt buyers typically face stricter responsible-sourcing expectations than for most other minerals. These should be addressed from the first conversation.
Product forms and buyer considerations
- Hydroxide
- An intermediate product commonly exported for further refining.
- Concentrates and ores
- Material requiring processing to recover cobalt.
- Buyer considerations
- Downstream battery customers may require full traceability documentation.
Specifications to confirm
- Product form and cobalt content by independent analysis
- Moisture and impurity profile
- Quantity and packaging
- DRC export documentation and applicable regulations
- Traceability information
Due diligence
- Apply recognised responsible-sourcing guidance for high-risk areas.
- Review risks relating to child labour and unsafe artisanal mining.
- Check the current DRC export regime, which can change.
The exact product form, specifications, documentation and availability must be confirmed for each proposed transaction. We do not publish prices, inventory, grades or delivery times.
