Overview

Tanzanite is a blue-to-violet gemstone found commercially in the Merelani area near Arusha, Tanzania. Its geographic rarity is a large part of its appeal to the gem trade.

Unlike metals, tanzanite is valued stone by stone on colour, clarity, cut and size. Most tanzanite is heat-treated to develop its blue colour, which buyers should expect and have documented.
